In a story posted to the Charlotte Observer website on Thursday, H1 Unlimited Chairman Sam Cole had was quoted saying that a deal has been signed with Houston to become the 6th U.S. race on the 2011 schedule. It has been speculation of the hydro world since an early May press release from P1 Powerboat that Houston would rejoin the circuit after a 22 year absence.
Sam Cole: "I think we're on the cusp of really growing the sport with Air National Guard as the sponsor of the series, Versus as our TV partner along with expansion both internationally and domestically. We're going to have at least an exhibition in China and we recently signed an agreement to return to Houston during Labor Day weekend for the first time since 1984."
This was part of an overall story after last weekend's Gold Cup, and about the overall state of Unlimited hydroplane racing.

Congratulations to the U-96 Spirit of Qatar crew and driver Dave Villwock on winning the 2011 APBA Gold Cup. It was the 3rd straight for Ellstrom Racing and Villwock's 9th. Dave also became the all-time winningest driver in Unlimited history by passing Bill Muncey with his 63rd win. What a great way to secure the record!
The entire Go3 Racing Team congratulates the U-96 guys on a job well done. It was an honor to have you in our shop, and to know that just a touch of 'Red 3' is apart of the Gold Cup title. Good luck the rest of the season! Below is a picture taken upon completion of the repairs with both teams. Notice 96 crewman Dan Walters (2nd from left, green shirt) pointing to that touch of red.....
Standing--Jeff Minar, Dan Walters, Ethan Walters, Ed Cooper, Bob Ross, Dave Villwock, Rick Bowles. Kneeling--Bob Burks and Jeff Emge.
