History Made in Seattle

7d_img_3486g10_img_3675Kayleigh Perkins Mallory made history on Lake Washington in Seattle Saturday morning. She became the first female ever to drive a turbine powered Unlimited hydroplane. Perkins Mallory got the chance to test the U-1 at the Albert Lee Cup at Seafair and ran 4 laps around the 2 mile course. Her first lap was 129.706, but then went 143.107, 146.368 and 147.058. All impressive times for the reigning Unlimited Lights champion driving the UL-72 at Seafair this weekend. The 147 lap would put her in 5th place out of 12 teams in the qualifying ladder. And, she would have out qualified her older brother Brian, currently in the seat of the U-21!

Brenda Jones raced an Unlimited in 1982, the first woman ever to drive in the modern ranks. There were several women who drove hydroplanes, prior to the Unlimited class being established.

The 4 laps will count towards Perkins Mallory being qualified to drive on the H1 Unlimited tour. No word on when or if she'll get to test another Unlimited this season, but she made history for the sport of Unlimited hydroplane racing on this date.

Piston Power Needed To Save Hydroplane Racing
kjr950seattleIn an early morning interview on 950 KJR Radio in Seattle, legendary announcer Pat O' Day believes, as well as champion driver Chip Hanauer, for the sport to stay alive they need to get rid of the turbine engine and go to piston power.  Click read more to hear O'Day's Comments.  KJR will have live coverage of the 2010 Seattle Seafair.

Thunder missing from Columbia Cup

"Guys like (U-96 Spirit of Qatar) Erick Ellstrom like to go out on the course and beat you, he doesn't like the back room politics stuff. But there are some of them, and I won't name them, that say that if I'm gone they'll get a bigger check." ----Ed Cooper Jr.

KENNEWICK -- There's a sign on a lift in Lampson Pits that says "Bring Back the Thunder" with the U3 right in the middle of it.

It's a tribute to Ed Cooper and the fact that his U-3 Go3Racing team isn't here this weekend for the Lamb Weston Columbia Cup.

In fact, Cooper is in Evansville, Ind., where he's sitting out the season at home with his boat, one of the most popular on the H1 Unlimited circuit because it's the only piston-powered boat in the fleet.

Welcome to this season's biggest controversy in unlimited hydroplane racing.

Bring Back the Thunder

These banners are now on display this weekend in the Neil Lampson pits at the Tri Cities Water Follies.

Thanks for the support from all our fans in the Tri Cities area. We really appreciate it and hope to bring the THUNDER back in 2011!
