Another Explanation Of Qualifying |
|
It seems we have another interpretation of the H1 Unlimited rulebook and qualifying. This time from Steve Montgomery, H1 Director of Public Relations, on the Hydropage.com forum.
H1 and the race organizers set up the testing and qualifying sessions to maximize the amount of time on the water that the weekend schedule allows. Here in the Tri-Cities, the qualifying sessions are shorter, but there are more of them. |

The Invasion of Social Media on Unlimited Hydroplane Racing |
|
Fans want news right now. And, they can get it.
Long gone are the days of getting hydro results from the newspaper on Monday morning or waiting to hear Jim Hendricks' radio reports throughout a race weekend. The new social media is now the way to get anything hydro related almost instantly. Facebook, Twitter and You Tube have taken over the way fans get their news about Unlimited hydroplane racing.

Water Follies Still Strong After All These Years |
|

"If every race had been like the Tri-Cities, we'd have a lot of races (on the schedule). You guys get the whole community involved." ---Ed Cooper Jr. Owner Go3racing
From the Tri City Herald By Jeff Morrow, Herald Sports Editor
KENNEWICK -- Seafair needed a last-minute infusion of cash to stay alive.
Same thing in Detroit, where the owner of Jarvis Construction jumped on board to save the Gold Cup.
Evansville won't have the hydros this year for the first time since 1979.
San Diego dropped off the schedule two years ago.
This year's schedule for H1 Unlimiteds -- five races -- is, in fact, pretty shaky.
"Seattle, I thought it was untouchable," said a stunned Dave Villwock, driver of the U-96 Spirit of Qatar. "Detroit, I thought that was untouchable."
But one race that has been pretty solid -- at least since 2007 -- has been the Lamb Weston Columbia Cup, which begins Friday and runs through Sunday on the Columbia River.

Messenger-Inquirer Editorial |
Owensboro, Kentucky hosted Unlimited hydroplane racing from 1969-1978. Gold Cup winning drivers Bill Sterett, Sr. and Jim McCormick were both from Owensboro and were instrumental in getting the races in their hometown. The Owensboro Regatta, then the renamed Owensboro Hydrofair were a popular draw on the Ohio River. But, after the 1978 Gold Cup in Owensboro was less than successful, the races were dropped and Evansville picked up the race as part of their Freedom Festival.
Now that Thunder on the Ohio appears to be finished after a 31 year run, the Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer picked up on no hydro racing in Evansville this year. Owensboro is in the middle of a massive multi million dollar riverfront renovavtion, with the emphasis of attracting events to the river---just like Unlimited hydroplane racing. Just a little food for thought........
River is more than just a backdrop
By the Messenger-Inquirer
Monday, July 19, 2010
So often, the plans for downtown focus just on what Owensboro should have along the riverfront and within the blocks that make up the city's core. It's easy to get wrapped up in the different public amenities and private developments and ignore the great Ohio River running past.
The ability to capitalize on the river was part of the decision to shift the planned events center to the riverbank and have the proposed design include a "river room" that offers visitors panoramic views of the Ohio River.
"The bottom line is, we took advantage of one of our prime assets, the river," Daviess County Judge-Executive Reid Haire said. "So many communities don't have that asset and would love to have it."
But the river should be much more than just a backdrop for the activity downtown, and local officials should explore how Owensboro can attract events to the river itself, not just the riverfront and downtown.
